What Do Well Pumps Do?
Once the well is deep enough to access the groundwater, electric pumps draw this water up to the surface. These days, the most common pump system for a shallow well (depth of about 25 feet) is the jet pump. The pump uses electricity to create suction that pulls the water into the surface plumbing system.
In case you need to go deeper than 25 feet to find the groundwater source, you will need to separate the jet assembly from the pump. The jet assembly is typically submerged well below the minimum water level and combined with a 35-feet-long tailpipe. This deep-well jet pump installation uses both jet suction and pump pressure to move the water upwards.
Jet pumps can safely lift water several hundred feet deep, but submersible pumps offer an even more efficient solution. As the name suggests, a submersible pump is immersed in the water so that instead of lifting the water, it’s pushing it up. These pumps are well-known for their reliability and typically last 20-25 years without any issues.
